Lot Essay

Extremely rare and large, the present Patek Philippe Calatrava 'Empire' was produced from 1951 to 1954 in very small numbers. It is believed that only approximately 120 examples were manufactured in yellow gold, and 100 in pink gold, with the present lot being one of only 7 known public examples to resurface. Nicknamed the 'Empire' due to its fluted lugs, this large 36.5 mm. timepiece also has beautiful coin edging on the case band. Further enhancing this seldom seen Calatrava is its Patek Philippe woven chain gold bracelet made by legendary manufacturer Gay Frères. Offered without reserve, this timepiece is a remarkable find and worthy to be coveted by the astute collectors of rare and vintage timepieces.
