Lot Essay

Extremely rare and seldom seen at auction, the present Patek Philippe timepiece is an incredibly early and large wristwatch dating to the beginning of the 20th century. Crafted from 18k white gold with a yellow gold caseback, this beautiful and oversized watch has an elegant presence, thanks to the concave caseback that allows the watch to meld to one’s wrist. It is elevated by its unusual and chic oval shape with elongated roman numerals on a white guilloche dial. The watch also features blued steel Spade hands. This handmade features French hallmarks and its caseback is engraved ‘J.F.S. 1913’ helping identify its original owner Mr. Jacob F. Schoellkopf Jr.

Born the third son of British-born American business tycoon Jacob F. Schoellkopf, Jacob Jr. continue the family legacy establishing Schoellkopf Aniline and Chemical Works as well as continuing the family business in hydroelectricity at Niagara Falls. During their family’s prolific time, they were amongst the most well-known and respected families in Buffalo, NY.
