Lot Essay

The design of the Patek Philippe Ref. 3580 echoes that of some of the more flamboyant watches made in the 1970s. It is beleived that this watch made for the Japanese market. The Ref. 3580 was produced between 1972 and 1980 and its tonneau-shape case and lack of a visible crown on the case band really sets it apart from the other Patek models of that era. It remains the only steel back-wound wristwatch produced by the Geneva brand. Only a few pieces of the Ref. 3580 have made it back to the secondary market and this particular example, with its hammered metal decoration case and bracelet makes it an eminently collectible Patek Philippe timepiece.
