Lot Essay

From the family of the original owner, the former head of the Romanian Red Cross, this superbly well-preserved Rolex 'red' Datejust 'Ovettone' reference 6305-1 may perhaps be one of the most charming and excellent examples in existence. As the name suggest, the Datejust text is in red along with having a roulette red and black date wheel, an extremely sought after feature by astute vintage Rolex collectors. Furthermore, as this is an early example, the watch has a slightly domed caseback that makes it wear much larger than 35.5 mm., leading to its nickname 'Ovettone' by Italian collectors.

Featuring a wonderfully sharp bezel, well-preserved dial with a 'radium burn' spot from the hands sitting in the same position for decades, and original 'Brevet' crown, this reference 6305-1 represents an exceedingly rare opportunity to own a prized and early vintage Datejust timepiece.

The Rolex Datejust
Introduced at the end of the Second World War in 1945, the Rolex Datejust commemorated the 40th anniversary of the storied brand. Perhaps one of the most iconic watches not only to the brand, but to the world, the Datejust is one of the longest, most continuously produced models. The timepiece was able to rise above its competitors because of its ability, as the name suggests, to instantaneously change the date at midnight. Other timepieces had a slow rollover date which began at 10 o’clock PM and completed its cycle around 2 o’clock AM. Over its 75 years of production, the Datejust has come in a plethora of dial colors, case sizes, bezel types, case metals, and attachment styles, making the timepiece have a wide array of options to choose from.
