Lot Essay
The celebrated Explorer reference 1016 was introduced to the market in 1959. One of Rolex's most popular sports watches, the Explorer is easily recognizable by its black dial with the luminous triangle at 12, luminous Arabic numerals for the other three quarters and luminous baton numerals for the remaining hours.

The present lot is offered in good overall condition. The dial is in good overall condition with light signs of aging, consistent with the age of the watch. The lume plots no longer respond when shown with a UV light and are starting to slightly degrade. The hands have lost material and do not respond to a UV light. The case is in good overall condition with signs of wear consistent with the age and use of the watch. There is some pitting and corrosion present at the caseback. The movement is in working order at the time of cataloging, consistent with the age of the watch. The movement has not been tested for accuracy. A service is recommended given the age of the watch.
