Studio Underd0g
A remarkable brand with an equally incredible story is viewed as a breath of fresh air in the horology world. TIME + TIDE, based in Melbourne, Australia, describes this London-based brand as one that “throws a playful wrench into the world of horology.” Founded by Richard Benc, Studio Underd0g was born during the pandemic from a single watch design posted on a Facebook page which quickly drew an outpouring of support and enthusiasm from the watch community. This overwhelming response became the foundation for a brand that has captivated collectors around the world.

Studio Underd0g defies traditional perceptions of watchmaking, an industry often seen as exclusive and inaccessible. Instead, they embrace a countercultural approach, focused on humor, humility, and high-quality craftsmanship. Their mission is simple yet profound: great design and exceptional timepieces should be accessible to all, not just the privileged. The brand name, Studio Underd0g, proudly reflects its outsider status and celebrates the journey from humble beginnings to a highly respected player in watch design.

One of their most iconic creations, the 01SERIES Watermelon, has become emblematic of their playful approach. The Watermelon model, generously contributed by Studio Underd0g to the 2024 Brian LaViolette Watch Auction with Christie’s, is a rare and meaningful piece in the brand’s history. This particular watch is one of the earliest prototypes and holds unique details, such as the “REVIEW SAMPLE” marking on the case-back and a movement without the swan neck regulator that was later added to production models. It was also featured in the brand’s very first video review by Jody from Just One More Watch, marking its entry into the watch community.

Reflecting on this partnership, Studio Underd0g’s founder, Richard, shared, “I had the pleasure of meeting Doug earlier this year during the WindUp Watch Fair in Chicago. I’m so pleased that Studio Underdog is able to participate in this year’s auction for such a wonderful cause.”

This contribution exemplifies the brand’s values and supports the meaningful mission of the Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation. In many ways, the journey of Studio Underd0g mirrors the spirit of the foundation, reminding us that passion, purpose, and a dedication to one’s craft can truly change lives.

The Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation would like to thank Richard Benc of Studio Underd0g for his generous donation

The Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation
Through great loss has come inspiration. At just 15 years old, Brian LaViolette’s life was claimed in a swimming accident, and on the day of his funeral, his family kept a promise to honor his name and memory by helping others. Founded in 1992, the Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation awards deserving college-bound students with scholarships to further their lives and education. Since then, the foundation is proud to have presented 1,160 scholarships to deserving individuals across the globe.
