Details
La Jota Vineyards was founded in the 1890’s by Frederick Hess, who built the winery from volcanic ash quarried on the property. Likewise, his first fermentation tanks also came from the estate—from a cluster of on-property coastal redwoods. At the 1900 Paris Exposition La Jota wines gained international acclaim by winning a bronze medal; in 1904 they won gold at the World’s Fair in St. Louis. La Jota wines are still handcrafted at their original 1898 fieldstone winery and hillside cave. The volcanic soils of the estate lead to the production of wines with highly concentrated flavors and strong tannins; the cool winds, daily temperature fluctuations and high altitude keep the grape acids immaculately balanced.
