Lot Essay

Toyin Ojih Odutola’s Birmingham (left) was produced during Odutola’s second residency at Tamarind Institute in New Mexico. Odutola’s personal use of line in her emotional portraits becomes almost sculptural in the print series. “Skin as geography is the terrain I expand by emphasizing the specificity of blackness. From there, the possibilities of portraying a fully-fledged person are endless.” (Toyin Odutola, 2012)
