Lot Essay

François Rübestück maître in 1766. Born in Westphalia he emigrated to Paris, establishing his workshop in the rue de la Roquette before transferring to the rue de Charenton. Rübestück specialised in complex floral marquetry (as seen here) inspired by the work of Jean-François Oeben who developed and perfected this technique. A closely related secretaire by Rübestück of near identical form, ostensibly only differing slightly in the design of the floral marquetry panels, was sold Christie's, London, 16 December 1999, lot 123 (£27,600). An important commode commissioned by the Duc de Penthièvre, Louis XIV's grandson, from Rübestück was sold Christie's, London, 23 May 2018, lot 263 (£150,000).
