Lot Essay

Nowhere was the fashion for chinoiserie stronger during the mid-late 18th century than in northern Italy with many palazzos often having suites of rooms decorated in this distinctive fantasy style. Between 1737 and 1741, Giovani Francesco Fariano was commissioned to paint the ceilings in the king's and queen's dressing rooms at Stupinigi, also designing corresponding wainscotting and shutters etc., with the scene completed by a series of chinoiserie wall hangings. A related Piedmontese chinoiserie 'lacca povera' cabinet on stand, circa 1740, of notably similar form, in particular the distinctive bow of the cabriole legs terminating in hoof feet, is illustrated F. Morena, Chinoiserie, The Evolution of the Oriental Style in Italy from the 14th to the 19th Century, Florence, 2009, p. 167, fig. 128 a.b.
