Lot Essay

This service, the design of which was derived from Chinese Kangxi originals dating from 1700-20, in turn imitating the Japanese Imari style, was given by Stanislas Augustus Poniatowski (King Stanislas II of Poland) to Sultan Abdul Hamid I of Turkey in 1776. The inscription at the well reads 'Obedience & fidelity are due to Kings (centre). From the King of the Lehks at Warsaw to the Tsar of the race of Osman as a token of respect this present is offered and sent. Established c. 1774 by Stanislas II Augustus Poniatowski (1732-1798), King of Poland, the factory specialised in diplomatic services and ornamental vases. Another plate from the Sultan's service is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, museum no. 544-1897.
