Lot Essay

Nowhere was the fashion for chinoiserie stronger during the mid-late 18th century than in northern Italy, with many palazzos having suites of rooms decorated in the distinctive fantasy style. Between 1737 and 1741, Giovani Francesco Fariano was commissioned to paint the ceilings in the king's and queen's dressing rooms at Palazzo di Caccia di Stupinigi, Piedmont, and also to design corresponding wainscotting, shutters and fittings with the scene completed by a series of chinoiserie wall hangings. A superb series of rooms, the boiserie inset with related 18th century chinoiserie panels at Villa d'Aglie, Turin is illustrated and discussed, L. Caterina & C.
