Lot Essay

Decorated with a central parcel-gilt multi-petalled rosette with dot motifs and a parcel-gilt border below a rim of wave and dot motifs. Ornate silver vessels, both serving utensils and drinking bowls like this one, were part of the household equipment of the Hellenistic elite. Used at symposia or aristocratic drinking parties, these vessels displayed the wealth of the owner. For those who wanted to emulate this lifestyle, but could not afford silver vessels, less expensive versions of these bowls were crafted in terracotta. For a similar vessel at the Getty Villa Museum, Malibu, cf. Inv. no. 81.AM.84.23.
