Lot Essay

The Samnites were an ancient Italic people who lived in south-central Italy, primarily in the mountainous region of Samnium. They were known for their fierce warrior culture and were one of Rome's most formidable adversaries during the early Republic. The Samnites engaged in a series of conflicts with Rome, known as the Samnite Wars (343-290 B.C.), before ultimately being absorbed into the Roman state. For a similar belt in The Metropolitan Museum see acc. no. 08.3a.
