A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This - deservedly - famous book that was the author's own copy, is in very good condition, with all 4 volumes showing some degree of wear commensurate with age, materials and handling. Nearly all of the plates have some faint insignificant staining or spotting to the extreme margins, but as stated in the cataloguing, this is only noticeable in about half of the plates and four of the titles, and only becomes heavy or touches the image area of about 15 plates.
The binding is strictly contemporary and has some occasional light scuffing or small tears to extremities, but these are minor in nature; three front free endpapers are almost detached.
The contemporary oak cabinet has a modern glass top that can slide out from the back. There are a few tiny scattered spots of paint to the woodwork, but overall the cabinet is in very good condition, free of splits or warping or other such major imperfections.
