Very rare first edition of Goethe’s poem of 6 stanzas, illustrated by six etchings by Carl Lieber and Carl Holdermann after Goethe’s drawings.

'Ich sah die Welt mit diebevollen Blicken,
Und Welt und ich, wir schwelgten im Entzücken;
So duftig war, belebend, immer Frisch
Wie Fels, wie Strom, so Bergwald und Gebüsch...'

This work was published by the Weimar painter and engraver Carl-August Schwerdgeburth (1785-1878), who also engraved a famous posthumous portrait of Goethe.

Quarto (392 x 310mm). 4 pages of text printed on a bifolium wrapper of brown paper, the letterpress on the outer covers within decorative border, imprint on upper cover outside the border, woodcut vignette on lower cover within border, uncut (plates lightly spotted, margins of wrapper a little crumpled, light vertical creasefold to whole).
