Details
Autograph note signed (“Leonard”) to Marianne Ihlen [New York, c.1974].

One page, 215 x 90mm, ink on paper; together with Hotel Chelsea envelope addressed to Ihlen in Cohen’s hand.

The Chelsea Hotel would play an important role in Cohen’s time in New York, not least lending itself to "Chelsea Hotel #2" which tells the story of an intimate encounter with Janis Joplin (Cohen would later express regret about mentioning who the song was about): “I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel / you were famous, your heart was a legend. / You told me again you preferred handsome men / but for me you would make an exception.” The song was the second track on Cohen’s 1974 album New Skin for the Old Ceremony. He writes here: “Dear Marianne / Keep in touch. Love to Axel. Just finished record. / All good things / Leonard.”
