Lot Essay

The present glass plated skeleton clock, with its five Y-shaped spokes to the great wheel, is one of a series produced, probably by a single manufacturer, in the early 19th century. Roberts notes that they are almost always unsigned, although one has been seen bearing the name ‘P. J. Beliard a Paris’. (D. Roberts, Continental and American Skeleton Clocks, Pennsylvania, 1989, pp. 80-89.)

The wheel of this clock is enamelled with the cypher of the Bourbon Kings. With intertwined ‘L’s beneath a crown and the Fleur de Lys flanked by a laurel garland, the cypher is that of Louis XVIII (1755-1824), formerly the comte de Provence and brother of Louis XVI. Louis XVIII acceded to the French throne after the fall of Napoleon and in the febrile atmosphere of early 19th century France competing claims to the throne were played out in both the public and domestic spheres. While the presence of the royal cypher might temptingly suggest that the clock was at one point part of Louis XVIII’s collection, the lack of other royal marks and the design of the clock would point more likely to a statement of support from a monarchist owner.
