Ce portrait reprend, en buste, la figure du roi Henri IV (1553-1610) en armure peinte par Frans Pourbus le Jeune (1569-6122) en 1610, et aujourd'hui conservée au musée du Louvre (Paris, inv. 1707). Le tableau de l'institution parisienne est l'unique représentation du 'roi de guerre' par le portraitiste anversois (voir B. Ducos, Frans Pourbus le Jeune 1569-1622.
