Lot Essay

The reference 1450 was produced from 1940 to the early 1960s and affectionately nicknamed ‘Top Hat’ by collectors due to its tall case profile. Interestingly, Italians also refer to this reference as ‘Cinesino’, as the case profile is indeed reminiscent of a Pagoda architecture.

The Top Hat was produced in yellow, pink and white gold, as well as in platinum (such as this rare example). Furthermore, its manually-wound caliber 9-90 is regarded as one of Patek Philippe’s finest movements.

Presented in very fine condition, this is wonderful watch for anybody passionate about vintage watches, particularly for those looking to dig into rare, white metal Calatrava references. It is believed that about 280 examples of the Ref. 1450 were made in platinum, out of which about 40 have been identified in the market.
