JUAN DE LA ABADIA (ACTIVE 1493-1513), PENTECOST, TEMPERA AND OIL ON PANEL, UNFRAMED

Juan de la Abadia (active 1493-1513) was an Aragonese painter whose work was part of the transition from the International Gothic style to the first influences of the Renaissance in Spanish painting, following in the in the wake of the pictorial innovations of Flemish artists at this date. These are particularly visible here in the heavy, angular folds of the apostles' clothing and in their carefully delineated physiognomy.

Few details are known about the artist's life and career. He was originally baptised the Maestro de Almudévar by the art historian Chandler Rathfon Post (1881-1959), based on the eponymous Aragonese town where his Santo Domingo altarpiece is kept. Ricardo del Arco y Garay (1888-1955) later established that this was the same painter as Juan de la Abadia the Elder, who is distinguished today from his son, Juan de Abadia the Younger (died before 1513), who assisted in his father's workshop.

In 2001, the Prado Museum acquired two of the master's panels dedicated to the life of Saint Anthony the Great (inv. P007769 and P007770), which in the past would have made up an important group of paintings. Other Spanish institutions own works by the painter, including the impressive Calvary in the Museum of Zaragoza (inv. 10040).
