When this pair of paintings last appeared at auction in 1995, they were catalogued as being among the first pictures acquired by Henry Hoare II for Stourhead House (loc. cit.), however the precise date of the paintings' acquisition remains unclear. This wonderful example of Pieter Angellis' work descended in the family to Sir Henry Ainslie Hoare, whose expensive hunting and gambling hobbies, combined with the agricultural depression of the 1880s, forced him to sell many of the treasures housed at Stourhead in 1883.

The first: The canvas is lined and stable on a keyed stretcher. The paint layer is slightly abraded, especially visible in the thinly painted areas of the sky. Some of the impasto in the vegetables has been well maintained. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some minor retouching in the aprons of the woman at left and the man with cart at far right along the drying craquelure, and some further retouches to the foliage at upper left.
The second: The canvas is lined and stable on a keyed stretcher. Areas of the stocked shelves and still life at lower left are slightly abraded. Some of the impastos in the fish and shellfish are well maintained. There is some scuffing and minor losses at the extreme edges, these are hidden when the painting is framed. A small surface scratch at lower left has been delicately restored and measures 2 inches in length. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some toning to the foliage along the upper part of the stall as well as some minor restorations in the sky, including a small area of restoration over the upper right corner.
The pair present well overall and can be displayed in their present state.
