Lola Pashalinski was a prominent figure in New York theatre during the 1960’s and one of the founding members of Charles Ludlam's Ridiculous Theatrical Company (1967-1980). The company pioneered the genre of “ridiculous theatre” which brought an unapologetically queer and camp performance to experimental theatre. As its name suggests, the Ridiculous Theatrical Company made a deliberate effort to be shocking or disturbing by leaning into the growing counterculture of the 1960s. As Pashalinski recalls, “it was very raw, it was very repulsive. It was very intense” (Pashalinski as quoted in Elyssa Goodman, "How Theater of the Ridiculous Changed Drama, Performance, and Queer Visibility Forever," Them, 2019). In addition to theatre, Pashalinski has also appeared in films such as I Shot Andy Warhol (1996) and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011). Prints of this image can be found in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Birmingham Museum of Art.
