One of Van Cleef & Arpels historical motifs (first incorporated into their designs in 1906) - the butterfly - was reinterpreted into a new form in 2004, a lacquer brooch which was part of a collaboration with the Japanese artist Junichi Hakose. This collaboration has endured for over 20 years, incorporating traditional Japanese techniques of lacquer work with maki-e, raden and rankaku under the umbrella of the Van Cleef style. The base of each butterfly is made in the VCA workshop in France before being sent to Hakose's workshop in Japan to be executed meticulously by hand as part of a limited edition series - reflected in their number out of 20 engraved on the frame.
