The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting has a wax lining and is secure on a keyed strainer. There is an even craquelure across the surface. Small unrestored losses are visible along the craquelure over the grapes in the sitter’s proper right hand, and further pinpoint losses are scattered across the surface. These do not distract from the painting’s legibility. An area of discolored restoration is visible in the background to the left of the sitter’s face. In strong natural light areas of an uneven varnish are visible, particularly in the background. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations and reveals that the painting was partially cleaned, with some areas of the varnish fluorescing, particularly in the background.
