The present work was commissioned to be translated into lithographs to benefit the Jacob Lawrence Gallery Endowment at the University of Washington, Seattle.
“He didn’t layer things, it was just straight painting of a flat color, filling in shapes [while] telling stories that meant a tremendous amount to him. He didn’t put a color down, let it dry, and put another color on top. He just went flat, like if you were cutting out pieces of paper.” – Linda Freeman, in an interview with Christie’s, February 2014.

The paper is attached to its support with tape on the reverse at each corner and in the center of each extreme edge. The paper appears to be slightly buckled and the edges are uneven. There appears to be evidence of artist's reworking in pencil. There is an artist pinhole in the upper right corner. There does not appear to be evidence of tears, repairs, or losses.
