Lot Essay

The bowl has a flared mouth, rounded body, and a recessed ring foot. The exterior rim is decorated with a band of alternating inverted and upright C-scrolls interspersed with dotted motifs. Above the foot, four decorative bands are painted in underglaze blue featuring foliate scrolls, ruyi-heads, and interlocking honeysuckle scrolls.

The present bowl masterfully combines traditional Chinese motifs—foliate scrolls and ruyi-heads—with Western-inspired elements such as interlocking honeysuckle scrolls and C-scrolls, resulting in a harmonious East-West synthesis. The overall composition is elegantly spaced, while the small, delicate form of the bowl further enhances its exceptional quality. For an example of similar decoration but of smaller size, see Sotheby’s London, 11 May 2022, lot 97. The design featuring alternating inverted and upright C-scrolls can also be found on fine scholar’s objects; see Christie’s Hong Kong, Chinese Classical Furniture From The Shitou Shuwu Collection, 30 April 2026, lot 1015.
