Collected prose fiction of Russian literary vanguard and contemporary of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, in a handsome edition. For his oeuvre, recorded in this deluxe edition produced shortly after his death, Turgenev was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Oxford in 1879 for proliferating Russian literature abroad – becoming the first novelist of any nation to receive this honour.

16 vols., quarto (155 × 227 mm). Half-titles, title-pages printed with Turgenev’s cipher in green on yellow field, additional title-pages printed in black, red and yellow with photogravure frontispieces on japon, additional plates. Publisher’s uniform half crushed levant brown morocco over light brown cloth, with gilt titling and ornamentation on spines, deckle edges, t.e.g., marbled endpapers, signed Stikeman & Co. (very light wear).
