Ce tableau est à mettre en relation avec l'oeuvre peinte par Le Greco (1541-1614) en 1605 représentant l'évangéliste Luc, un pinceau dans une main et une image peinte de la Vierge et de l'Enfant dans l'autre (Cabildo Catedral Primalda, Tolède, inv. 01/982.2). Dans l'oeuvre ci-présente, le suiveur du maître a décidé de représenter le saint sous un cadrage plus reserré, mettant davantage l'emphase sur le regard de l'évangéliste, tout en gardant les tonalités contrastantes chères au maître.

Le tableau a fait l'objet d'un rentoilage, un peu fort qui a tassé la matière picturale. Il est sous un vernis ancien, blanchâtre. Le tableau est encrassé et pourrait bénéficier d'un nettoyage. Il possède un réseau de craquelures un peu prononcé. A l'oeil nu, on constate une petite restauration dans les cheveux de saint Luc. L'examen à la lumière UV permet de distinguer d'anciennes restaurations au niveau de la barbe. Le tableau est sous un vernis ancien, fluorescent, uniforme ne permettant pas de distinguer de probables anciennes campagnes de restaurations. Dans un cadre en bois doré sculpté et poinçonné (approx. 53,5 x 50 x 7,5 cm).
English The canvas has been subject to a relining. The relining process has slightly flattened the upper paint layers.
It is covered under an old varnish that has blanched slightly. The varnish carries some dirt and would benefit from cleaning. The paint has a relatively pronounced network of craquelure. In natural light, a small area of retouching can be seen in Saint Luke's hair.
Examination under UV light reveals old restorations to the beard. The thick varnish precludes a more in depth examination.
