Lot Essay

Very rare lithograph by Beatrix Potter. Another copy of this print was part of the Leslie Linder bequest to the Victoria & Albert Museum. It is described there as a trial proof, made to practice the technique of lithography. (Note that the "9" in the date is printed in reverse.) Beatrix Potter's home was in South Kensington, not far from the Natural History Museum. It is thought that the moth studies were made from her observations there and were probably among the entomological illustrations commissioned from Potter by Caroline Martineau. See Linda Lear, Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature, 2007, p.98.
