Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
As mentioned in the catalogue, approximately seven of the letters are present only as fragments, of which three lack the conclusion, two the opening pages and two both opening and conclusion. The condition generally presents no significant problems, with the paper strong (apart from occasional creasing and minor soiling at folds) and the ink clear and unfaded. One fragmentary, undated letter is in pencil, and is rather smudged. There is slightly more marked soiling along the inner upper margin of a letter dated ‘Samedi 7 heures’ on paper with blind-stamped heading of the Ville de France Hotel. As noted in the catalogue, one letter has an excision: this is a letter dated simply ‘Samedi’, and the excision is from the left margin, approx. 70 x 100mm, presumably extracting a drawing from the recto, and affecting approximately 8 lines of text on the verso.
