Lot Essay

Including: Venezia Murano; 412 % Interest; Supermarket, San Francisco; The Ginger Man; Big Diamonds; Chock Full O'Nuts, 57th Street; Pressing Machinery and Piccadilly Station

In contrast to his earlier Urban Landscapes series, Estes’ second portfolio collaboration with Domberger features eight vertically-oriented compositions of glass facades and narrow spaces. Rendered in dark tones these alternately flat and perspectival constructions depict sites in New York, San Francisco, and London. Their glass and metal facades create a rich pattern of signage and reflective planes. Screenprinting, a stencil process was the ideal medium to approximate Estes’ elaborate, flat, and linear images. For Estes’ screens he shipped painted maquettes to their German workshop, where the printers broke down the image into its general forms to create a series of screens.
