In adapting his 1967 book Higgelty Piggelty Pop! as an opera, Sendak brought his beloved Sealyham terrier Jennie to life as detailed in the three present studies for Jennie's costume. Sendak's libretti for Where the Wild Things Are and Higgelty Piggelty Pop! were set by British composer Oliver Knussen (1952–2018), and premiered as a double bill at the 1985 Glyndebourne Festival. The role of Jennie was originated by British mezzo-soprano Cynthia Buchan.
