The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is executed on panel, made up of two boards horizontally joined and bevelled to the lower edge. There is one butterfly support to the centre left edge. The panel remains stable. The picture presents well in natural light. Examination in a raking light reveals some retouching along the lower panel join and in the blacks of the sitter’s costume. Examination under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouching. There is further scattered retouching to the lower left-hand corner and some strokes in the lower fronds of the sitter’s hair. There is quite a thick varnish that precludes a more in depth examination. The painterly approach to execution remains well preserved.
