A POLISH PARCEL-GILT SILVER CUP AND COVER
MARK OF PETER RHÖDE II, GDAŃSK, CIRCA 1670
On spreading circular base chased with large flowers and scrolling leaves repeated on cover, the stem cast as a Roman soldier holding in one hand the pear-shaped cup chased with ribbon-tied fruit garlands centred by a pomegranate, the cover with vase of flower finial, marked on rim of foot, cover and body: town, makers and later French control mark

Peter Rhöde appears to be one of the most documented Polish goldsmith whose name is often cited in archives and literature. However not many objects from his workshop have been clearly identified but surviving pieces attest of his talent as a chaser and designer.
This cup is one eight known of this style by this maker, with small variations in the stem featuring either a putto or a soldier as in this instance. One is in the Westpreußisches Landesmuseum in Münster-Wolbeck (No inv. 93/371 BMI) ; four are in the Kremlin Museum in Moscow (No. M3 157/ M3 158/ M3 156); one is in the Gdańsk Historical Museum (No MHMG/S/910); another was identified in the auction catalogue of the Collection of the Groote estate from the Baroness von K., Kunsthandlung Emil Richter, Dresde, 5 November 1928, Lot 231.

This cup is the eighth recorded in 1897 and 1914 in the von Heyl collection in Darmstadt.

The cup is in the style of standing cups from Augsbourg and Nuremberg but nevertheless holds its own identity probably from the choice of motifs chased on the cup as well as the standing figure. The general shape and decoration precedes Danzig works from the following two decades and is an important piece in the production of
Rhöde’s workshop.

For a more detailed discussion on Rhöde and this cup, see Dariusz Nowacki, Warsztat złotnika gdańskiego Petera II Rodego, Academia, 2002.
