Lot Essay

Candida Höfer is renowned for her large-format color photographs of architectural interiors. Through her exploration of carefully ordered spaces devoid of people, she invites viewers to consider the influence of environment and the presence of those who are absent from the image.
A student of Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Höfer developed a rigorous documentary approach that examines the cultural and social significance of public spaces.

The work comes from the collection of Antonio Homem Sonnabend. Sonnabend Gallery’s program supported the avant-garde and conceptual art helping shape the course of Post-War collecting.
