Lot Essay

This table bears close comparison with an Irish serving table sold from the collection The Misses Overends, Airfield, Dundrum, Co. Dublin which was sold at Hamilton, Osborne and King, house sale, 28 May 1995, lot 70, and was then subsequently sold, Christie's London, 30 November 2000, lot 98 (£47,000). That table shared the same form with an apparently identical shaped and fluted frieze, very similar patera to the top of the front legs and similarly plain back legs raising the possibility that they may have emanated from the same workshop.

Considered typically Irish, this form relates to one previously at Belgard Castle, Cloidwalkin, Co. Dublin, illustrated in M. Harris & Sons, A Catalogue and Index of Old Furniture and Works of Decorative Art, London, n.d., vol. III, p. 328. A marquetry inlaid example in the National Museum, Dublin, is attributed to William Moore and bears the crest of the O'Grady family of Killballyown, Co. Limerick.
