Lot Essay
Anastasia Lebedev moves fluidly across drawing, ceramics, textiles and jewellery, yet continually returns to the luminous allure of cyanotypes, where history and contemporary experimentation meet in brilliant Prussian blue. Discovered by Sir John Herschel in the nineteenth century, this pioneering photographic process underpinned early photography before finding new life in Victorian botanical studies and engineering blueprints. Inspired by the trailblazing botanist Anna Atkins, whose 1843 cyanotype book transformed scientific observation into art, Anastasia builds on this rich heritage and embraces the medium’s original alchemy, using sunlight and carefully gathered natural materials to create each unique, yet timeless, composition. Her cyanotypes, presented here following sold-out appearances in previous Christie’s auctions, weave botanical forms with abstract gestures, creating a dialogue between past and present. Each work is both tribute and transformation, celebrating the enduring beauty and evolving possibilities of this remarkable medium.
