Ohashi Suiseki (1865–1945), born in Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture, was best known for his depictions of tigers, earning him the nickname “Suiseki of Tigers.” He studied painting in Kyoto under great painters such as Amano Hoko (1824-1894) and Watanabe Shoka (1835-1887). Highly regarded during his lifetime, Suiseki received the only gold medal awarded to a Japanese painter at the 1900 Paris Exposition, followed by further gold medals at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair and the 1910 Japan-British Exhibition.
