Kuroda Seiki is aptly described by his sobriquet, the “Father of Yōga (western-style painting)". The present lot, executed right before his passing, is a tender portrait that emblematizes his influence on modern Japanese art. The bright, pleinairisme of the study and the partially nude woman as subject displays a stylistic innovation and liberal spirit that has long been revered. Born in Takamibaba, Seiki spent a decade studying in France as a pupil of esteemed painters such as Raphael Collin (b. 1850) and Jules Bastien Lepage (b. 1848). Upon his return, the artist combined the techniques he encountered abroad with his Japanese sensibility, employing impressionist visual language to describe native subject matter. He later served as the dean of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, transforming artistic curricula to resemble European academic training. Throughout his career, he was known for working with recurrent sitters, such as Maria Billault (b. 1870) in Reading (1891) and Kitchen (1892), and his own wife Kaneko Taneko (B. 1873) in Woman in Red (1918) and the iconic Lakeside (1897). This sitter, while unidentified, is treated with the same grace. She is softly modelled and the scenery is rendered luminously. Seiki’s work won countless accolades while challenging Japanese prejudice against nude paintings. His nudes forced the terms of the debate into the open, and paintings like this one trailblazed a new era of culturally hybrid painting that held a lasting predominance in the history of art. Today, his work is celebrated through the Tokyo National Museum’s Kuroda Memorial Hall.
