The canvas is unlined and secure on a keyed strainer. Duct tape has been affixed to the tacking edge and strainer bars along the perimeter. There is a matte varnish and the paint surface is stable. Abrasion is visible in some areas, resulting in paint loss, most notably in the sitter's proper right eye, along his proper right jaw, along the proper left side of his face, and scattered in the background, with a large area just below his proper left arm, measuring 5 3/4 x 2 1/4 inches. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals and area of restoration in the sitter's proper right should, measuring approximately 3 x 2 centimeters. The varnish over the sitter's clothing and in the upper right corner fluoresces under ultraviolet light. The painting can be hung in its present state.
