Lot Essay

In this contemporary woodblock print, Shiozaki Ken translates imagery from Attack on Titan into the medium of ukiyoe. The series, created by Isayama Hajime, became one of the most influential global manga and anime franchises of the 21st century. Its dynamic aerial combat and colossal adversaries echo the dramatic scale and kinetic compositions of warrior prints by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Lot 11). By adopting the visual language of Edo woodblock design, the print reveals how contemporary anime continues to draw upon narrative intensity and compositional strategies long present in Japanese printmaking.
