Lot Essay

Dating from 1910, Sonnenaufgang marks a pivotal moment in Lyonel Feininger's career. Signaling the emergence of his mature artistic language at the intersection of Cubism and German Expressionism, the present work blends the caricature style of his early oeuvre with the avant-garde formal experimentation that would come to define his later practice. Compressed architectural forms and spatial elements coalesce in fractured planes and rhythmic diagonals, animating his depiction of a town at daybreak. In the foreground stand Feininger's characteristic flâneurs, humorously rendered and playfully scaled within this topsy-turvy space. Their awkward presence serves as a metaphor for humanity's uncertain place at the dawn of a rapidly changing modern world and the radical artistic vision emerging to represent it.
