This cityscape of Frankfurt, with a temporary, wooden bridge crossing the Main River, not far from Beckmann's studio, includes a hidden self-portrait. The man in a dark suit and bowler hat just turning the corner on the bridge is undoubtedly a caricature of Beckmann himself, recognisable not only by the trademark hat but also by his large head and prominent chin.
