FURTHER DETAILS
A POLISH SILVER-GILT TANKARD
MARK OF AUGUSTIN III HEYNE (1602-1631), BRESLAU (WROCLAW), DATED 1613
Shaped cylindrical, the faceted octagonal body on domed foot chased with fruit, foliage and scrolls on matted ground, the side handle cast with a winged demi female figure, the hinged lobed cover embossed with tear-drop lobes chased with symmetrical scrolls centred by cherub masks and flowers, and with winged cherub thumbpiece and baluster final, the body finely engraved with allegorical figures emblematic of the Seven Heavenly Virtues, the eighth panel with patience, variously engraved, with alternating panels of putto mask and flowers between, the figure of Charity dated 1613, marked underneath and on cover with town and maker; later control mark of Lemberg (1807-1866)

The virtues on this tankard are inspired by engravings dated 1595 by Jacob Matham (1571–1631), active in Haarlem, after Hendrik Goltzius (1558–1617) (see illustration of Justice).

The Seven Virtues were a recurring theme in the decoration of tankards. They served as reminders of moral and spiritual principles, particularly within a Christian context, and encouraged behaviors such as temperance and moderation, especially in social settings involving drinking. The inclusion of these virtues on luxury objects like tankards also reflected the owner's education and piety. Finally, they helped convey Christian values while striking a balance between worldly pleasures and spiritual ideals.

Augustin III Heyne was the third in a long line of goldsmiths, beginning with Augustin I Heyne in 1572. He became a master in 1602 and died in 1631. Another tankard by him is known, also with faceted sides, decorated with portraits of kings and heroes based on the engraving series by Nicolas de Bruyn, dated 1594 (formerly held at the Schlesisches Museum für Kunstgewerbe und Altertümer in Breslau until 1942; see Hinze, op. cit., p. 82).
