GALUCHAT
A distinctive and luxurious form of shagreen, galuchat is made from the skins of stingrays or sharks, prized for its exceptionally tactile surface and characteristic granular texture. The tiny, closely set calcified scales create a subtle, jewel-like effect, while the material’s durability lends itself particularly well to fine decorative objects and furniture. The technique takes its name from Jean-Claude Galluchat, a celebrated Parisian leatherworker to the French court in the 18th century, whose innovative use of stingray skin brought the material into fashion.
Favoured by the aristocracy and associated with the refined taste of the French Ancien Régime, galuchat became a hallmark of luxury craftsmanship, admired for its exotic appearance, tactile quality and enduring elegance.
