Lot Essay

The present lot portrays a Bergsänger bursting into celebratory song after the discovery of a significant new deposit of ore in the mines. He is one of a small series of mining figures which Kändler modelled after engravings by Johann Christoph Weigel which illustrated a publication on miners (1).

(1) ‘Depiction and Description of All Mining Officials and Workers According to Their Usual Rank and Order in Proper Mining Attire’ (Abbildung und Beschreibung derer sämtlichen Berg-Wercks-Beamten und Bedienten nach ihrem gewöhnlichen Rang und Ordnung im behörigen Berg-Habit), published in Nuremberg in 1721.
