Lot Essay

Abraham Bogardus (1822-1908) learned the daguerreotype process from George W. Prosch in 1846 and opened a gallery at 363 Broadway in New York. He had a very long and active career in photography, opening studios in numerous locations over the course of 41 years, including a gallery in Newark, NJ.

Later in his career he served as the president of the National Photographic Association. During his most prolific period, he claimed to have produced over 200,000 daguerreotypes. His work can be found in the collections of the International Center of Photography, New York; The National Portrait Gallery, Washington D. C.; and The J. P. Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
