Jean-François Garand (fl. 1748 - 1778) started his apprenticeship in 1735 with Léopold Artaut, futur jeweller to the King, moving in 1740 with Richard Jarry. He entered his mark in 1748.
Garand's boxes often combined gold with other mediums such as hardstone or tortoiseshell as for a snuff-box sold by Christie's in the Bayreuth Collection in November 2023, lot 38. But Garand was also a retailer and put his signature on boxes made by his fellow goldsmiths including Formey, Le Bastier and Robert. He was one of the suppliers of jewelry to the Menus-Plaisirs du Roi, and is mentioned in the archives of the Presents of the King in 1757 for the delivery of jewelry to the Marquis de l'Hôpital, ambassador to the Russian Imperial Court, to be presented to the Empress.

Garand semble avoir affectionné les mélanges de matières telles que la pierre et l'écaille de tortue comme pour celle vendue chez Christie's dans la Collection Bayreuth en novembre 2023, lot 38. Mais Garand était aussi revendeur et apposa sa signature sur des boîtes fabriquées par ses confrères dont Formey, Le Bastier et Robert. Il fût l'un des fournisseurs de bijoux des Menus-Plaisirs du Roi, et est mentionné dans les archives des Présents du Roi en 1757 pour la livraison de bijoux au marquis de l'Hôpital, ambassadeur à la Cour Impériale Russe, pour être présentés à l'Impératrice.
