Beckmann was a great admirer and avid reader of Dostojevski, and created two printed portraits of the Russian author.
The present little booklet, which was produced cheaply and of which few copies appear to have survived, illustrates one chapter of his novel Notes from the House of the Dead, which describes how the prisoners in a labour camp are taken to a public bathhouse. The narrative, published in instalments between 1860-62, is based on Dostojevski's own experiences of the four years he spent in a prison camp in Siberia, convicted of illegal political activity - a poignant subject then as it is today, not just in Russia.
